How to Change Your Windshield Wipers

How to Change Your Windshield Wipers

We're glad that the cold days of winter are behind us once again, and with them the tricky winter driving. Sure, our vehicles at Slingerland CDJR are some of the best for handling inclement weather-after all, if a Chevrolet pickup or an all-wheel drive Jeep can't handle the snow and ice, what can?

The spring months, however, bring their own dangerous weather conditions. Driving in this rainy season can be tricky, especially when your vehicle is not properly equipped. That's why it's so important to change your windshield wipers at the start of each spring season. It's easy to forget about these necessary safety tools, but without a good pair of wipers, visibility seriously decreases, which can be very dangerous.

Spring is a good time to replace wipers, but you may need to replace them earlier in the year if you notice certain signs. Bad or old wipers will often be extra squeaky, or leave streaks or a milky film when they're wiping.

Once you've decided to change your blades, it's time to buy them. Be sure you know the exact make and model of your car, and then head to your local auto parts store or dealership. They will use the information about your car to find the pair of blades that fit your wipers.

To change the blades:

  • First pull them up so that they stand up vertically.
  • Look at where the blade meets the arm, and you'll find a small hinge there.
  • Press that tab in, then gently pull the blade downwards away from the arm.  (Be cautious of your windshield during this step. If the bladeless arms of your wipers were to snap down, the metal could seriously damage the glass.)
  •  Next, attach the new wiper blade as you found the old one.
  • Line up the hinge perpendicularly to the wiper and place the arm's hook over the wiper's hinge.
  • Pull the wiper upwards until you feel and hear it click into place.

Voila! You have new wiper blades that are ready to tackle the toughest storms. Bring it on, rain clouds.
